help wanted We need your help!
We are compiling videos of kids, teachers, and parents' views and memories of how STEM education has impacted their lives and education. Please take a moment to record yourself and/or your child talking about the impact of a STEM education. We have sample topics that you and/or your child can speak about. Click STEM Video Questions to see sample questions. You do not need to talk about every topic, you can pick 1-2 of your favorite topics. Please upload your videos to Mrs. Westrick’s Flipgrid site and the topic is called STEM Reflections by February 19th. https://flipgrid.com/westrick5501 (join code) https://flipgrid.com/583434a3 (record videos here)

Family STEM Challenge Family STEM Challenge

March

As part of our STEM Program and family engagement at Austin Elementary School, we would like to invite families to participate in a fun, engaging, and non-mandatory STEM activity to complete once a month. The activity would aim to involve members of your family group and would use simple and common materials found around your house. You will not need to purchase any additional materials.

In our March STEM Challenge, you are going to design and build a car that moves by wind power.  You may use only recycled materials or items already in your house. Examples of items are cardboard, construction paper, cardstock, glue, Duct tape, masking tape, straws, bottle caps, Life Savers Candy, etc.  You are not permitted to use Legos, K’nex, or toy cars Do not forget that you will need tools to complete your design! You may use kid-friendly scissors and a ruler or tape measure.  Your final design must travel a distance of at least 4 feet. The car must move by wind (blowing, hair dryer, fan, etc.). Cars must be made of recycled materials or items you can find at home. When you complete your STEM Challenge, submit your photos/videos to this Google Form or you can submit your creation to the Flipgrid site to be featured in our weekly announcements

wifi Complimentary Internet Offer from Comcast
Effective Monday, March 16, 2020, we are putting in place two substantial program enhancements to help these families deal with this crisis. Click here for all details.
  • We will make it even easier for low-income families who live in a Comcast service area to sign up by offering new customers 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service, which is normally available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month.
  • Also, we are increasing Internet speeds for the Internet Essentials service from 15/2 Mbps to 25/3 Mbps for all new and existing customers, which will be the speed of the service going forward. In this way, we will ensure that Internet Essentials customers will be able to use their Internet service for all their increased needs as a result of this health crisis.
