help wanted We need your help!
We are compiling videos of kids, teachers, and parents' views and memories of how STEM education has impacted their lives and education. Please take a moment to record yourself and/or your child talking about the impact of a STEM education. We have sample topics that you and/or your child can speak about. Click STEM Video Questions to see sample questions. You do not need to talk about every topic, you can pick 1-2 of your favorite topics. Please upload your videos to Mrs. Westrick’s Flipgrid site and the topic is called STEM Reflections by February 19th. https://flipgrid.com/westrick5501 (join code) https://flipgrid.com/583434a3 (record videos here)
Family STEM Challenge Family STEM Challenge

As part of our STEM Program and family engagement at Austin Elementary School, we would like to invite families to participate in a fun, engaging, and non-mandatory STEM activity to complete once a month. The activity would aim to involve members of your family group and would use simple and common materials found around your house. You will not need to purchase any additional materials.  This month’s STEM Challenge is perfect for celebrating! Design and test a cannon that launches confetti. For inspiration, listen to this book. Don’t want confetti all over your house? Try using bird or flower seeds and spread the joy outside. This challenge explores the science concepts of elasticity, potential energy, and kinetic energy. Brainstorm machines or tools that use springs, bands, or other elastic materials to get work done. Suggested supplies: cardboard tubes; balloons, duct tape; confetti (bird or flower seeds). Use any materials that you have at home. When you complete your design, submit your photos/videos to this Google Form. Or you can submit your creation to the Flipgrid site to be featured in our weekly announcements. Don’t forget to fill out the Challenge Reflection Sheets. How to submit responses on Flipgrid: 1). Click on the following link: https://flipgrid.com/eb2057b3 2). Log in with Microsoft (Login is your s+student number@dekalbschoolsga.org and your Dekalb password).

wifi Complimentary Internet Offer from Comcast
Effective Monday, March 16, 2020, we are putting in place two substantial program enhancements to help these families deal with this crisis. Click here for all details.
  • We will make it even easier for low-income families who live in a Comcast service area to sign up by offering new customers 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service, which is normally available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month.
  • Also, we are increasing Internet speeds for the Internet Essentials service from 15/2 Mbps to 25/3 Mbps for all new and existing customers, which will be the speed of the service going forward. In this way, we will ensure that Internet Essentials customers will be able to use their Internet service for all their increased needs as a result of this health crisis.
