Join the HRRB Club!
At the Bowl, students strive to "buzz" in and correctly answer questions about the current year's Georgia Book Award
nominees faster than the opposing teams.
Mrs. Kossak will sponsor an after-school club based on the Bowl for 4th and 5th graders. Members will read and discuss the nominee books (see categories below). Ten reading bowl club members will be selected to represent Austin Elementary at the HRRB on Saturday, January 27, 2018 beginning at 1:00 PM at Arabia Mountain High School, 6610 Browns Mill Rd., Lithonia, GA, 30038.
Team members will be chosen based upon behaviors exhibited at the meeting as outlined in the team selection rubric (see links below).
The HRRB Club/Team will meet weekly on Thursdays in the library from dismissal-3:30 PM. Below are specific dates for club meetings and then for team meetings.
Meetings for ALL CLUB Members
Practices for TEAM Members ONLY
Team selection will be announced in December. After the announcement, only the ten chosen team members will attend remaining practices in January. Other club members are excused.
To be in the club...
1. Start checking out and reading the nominee books (as many as you can, one group at a time),
2. Plan with your family to stay for our meetings! Bring a signed permission slip (see links below) FOR EACH club meeting you attend--this will serve as the REQUIRED "change of dismissal" form. Feel free to bring a snack, too.
We have divided up the list of nominee books into four categories--two groups for 4th grade and two for 5th grade. If not enough students from one grade level try out for a category, it will be opened up to the other grade level.
Students will try to secure a spot on the HRRB team
by earning points from the team selection rubric AND by *trying out* for the category or categories of books they have read.
As always, there are many wonderful books on the GA CBA/HRRB list! Many of the books touch on complicated topics that are relevant to what is happening in our world today.
Here are the 2017-18 titles in each category:
4th Grade Group A
All Rise for the Honorable Perry T. Cook
The Best Man
The Seventh Most Important Thing
4th Grade Group B
Unidentified Suburban Object
Ms. Bixby's Last Day
What Elephants Know
The Wild Robot
5th Grade Group C
Drowned City: Hurricane Katrina & New Orleans
Waiting for Augusta
5th Grade Group D
When Friendship Followed Me Home
Lily and Dunkin
Footer Davis Probably is Crazy
As Brave as You
5th Grade Group E
Once Was a Time
Nine, Ten: A September 11 Story
The PowerPoint presentation below gives a synopsis of each book.
Two team members will be selected for each category. Students are welcome to *try out* for as many categories as they want to.
We are trying to encourage students to read a variety of books AND be a competitive team at the same time! Thank you for supporting this cause.
We look forward to seeing you at
a Reading Bowl Club meeting!
